Flex Final Example

Hello Everyone!

So far I've been seeing great things come out of your projects.  We're to the final round and I must say that the expectation for the class have grown since I was enrolled in the class last semester.  Be aware that what you are learning now will help you when you graduate and seek work.  The projects will make great portfolio items to show off to potential employers.  I may join in and add some of the bells and whistles that you need for your application in my old final project.  On that note, I've decided to post a link to my final project for the class.  When I was enrolled, I didn't have to incorporate the Twitter API, nested charting, or a third party class into my project.

My final project can be found here.

Flex Tutorials Week 3

This week's set of tutorials will demonstrate how to filter certain categories of content using a ComboBox and a Slider.  Also, I will be introducing Charting Components inside of Flex.

Tutorial 1: Filters Using a ComboBox

This tutorial will demonstrate how filtering works using a ComboBox.  This tutorial also requires the content provided below.  The tutorial can be found here.

The content required for the tutorial can be found here.

A mirror for the content can be found here.

Tutorial 2: Filters Using a Slider

This tutorial will cover using a slider to filter data from an XML file.  You will need to import the content portion from Tutorial 1 for this exercise.  This tutorial shows how to can filter items based on a numerical value with the slider.  The tutorial can be found here.

Tutorial 3: Introduction to Charting Components

This tutorial will introduce you to one of the charting components Flex offers.  The data will be hardcoded in this exercise, so no files will be needed.  The tutorial can be found here.

Tutorial 4: Charting Components and XML

This tutorial will focus on charting using XML data.  The tutorial can be found here.

The content required for the tutorial can be found here.

Flex Tutorials Week 1

This is the first set of tutorials for week 1 of the Omega Flex project.  These tutorials will not only assist you in learning how to use Flex, but they will also be a great source of information when developing your Flex applications.  Also, the second in class programming exercise went very well! I've seen a major improvement in finding code errors and typos and overall class participation was excellent.

Tutorial 1: Events

This exercise will show you how to use and fire basic events in the Flex environment using AS3 and MXML.  The tutorial can be found here.

Tutorial 2: Data Providers

This exercise will show you how to use DataProviders in the Flex environment using AS3 and MXML. The tutorial can be found here.

Tutorial 3:  Writing Classes

This exercise will show you how to create and code Classes in the Flex environment using AS3 and MXML. The tutorial can be found here.

*Correction* The default constructor in the Course Class should be capitalized.  It won't have an effect on whether or not the program runs.  It's just proper :P

Tutorial 4: Using Custom Classes and External Data

This exercise will show you how to use the Classes you made in Tutorial 3 along with with the XML file and content it was designed and coded for.  the tutorial can be found here

The XML file and images needed for this tutorial can be found here

Omega Project

The needed XML file and images for the Omega Widget can be found here.

Flex Tutorials Week 2

In week 2 of the tutorials we will be looking at using the ViewStack component in Flex and a tutorial on List Controls and Item Render.

Tutorial 1: ViewStacks

This exercise will cover ViewStacks in Flex and how to customize them.  The tutorial can be found here.

Tutorial 2: List Controls and Item Render

This exercise will cover List Controls in Flex and creating an in code component called Item Rendering.  After that you will create two custom MXML external components called thumbnail  and displayTextAndPicture.  You will need the scripts created from Week 1 and the Course XML content and images.  This tutorial will be a bit more time consuming than the others.  Also, be aware that the interface on the final products will look tacky.  Finally, comments will be sparse in these tutorials.  This is because I believe that the class as a whole has done very well when it comes to understanding AS3 and it's basic concepts.  If you do have questions about any of the code, though, please send an email.  I will also discuss this exercise on Wednesday.  The tutorial can be found here.
